My experience with the timeshare industry was a short period of about 14 months with a company that will remain nameless due to my commitment to being 100% objective with this information.

When my previous industry fell apart with the housing crash of 2007, I was searching for a replacement to my income. I found and fell in love with the timeshare industry. I was sold on the idea that I was helping owners "go on vacation" and getting paid REALLY WELL to do it. I truly thought I had found the perfect job centered around being "on vacation".

I listened, learned and very quickly became one of the top sales reps at a very high volume resort. I loved it and thought I was really helping people in the process. I thought I had the best job in the world, but that quickly changed one day after another successful sale was completed. 

The day everything changed:

I had just completed another successful sale after 5 hours of "helping" someone. I was very excited because not only did I think I had helped someone with the burden of payments and maintenance fees, I made around $1,800 in commission. I was on cloud nine until another salesman walked in my office after listening to the majority of my pitch and said firmly:

MAN YOU REALLY BELIEVE THIS CRAP... DON'T YOU?

Well obviously that shocked me, and I asked him what he meant by that. Of course I believed it or I would never be able to sell it. He then patted me on the shoulder, shook his head side to side and laughed. As he walked out of my office, he said loudly almost as if to make a point to everyone around listening...

DON'T WORRY; YOU WILL FIGURE IT OUT!

Then he looked at me over his shoulder with a huge grin on his face and said...

WE WILL CONVERT YOU TO THE DARK SIDE!

Well obviously that shook me to my core! That rocked my world because I had really bought into everything that I had been taught in the intense training classes that we had to attend several times a week. I really thought I was telling the truth and helping these people, but what I realized after that day was that I was personally responsible for putting tons and tons of families into deep debt for quite frankly "bogus reasons", and out of just pure ignorance on my part.

I did not make another sale the rest of that month!

So what happened next:

After finding out that I might need to do some personal investigating into what I was telling families, I began to call most of the owners that I had sold over the previous several months to find out how everything was going. What I found out absolutely devestated me. Almost all of them were furious with me for one reason of another.

The more I began to uncover the truth about what I had sold people, the madder I became! I felt so stupid for just believing what I had been told and could not believe that any company could get away with actually TRAINING their sales people to tell such vivid lies.

So then I actually moved from SALES to a MARKETING position just so I could continue to feed my family without the guilt associated with selling a product that I didn't believe in. Then someone actually made the comment to me:

"So, instead of slaughtering people... you are just going to lead them to slaughter; OH THAT'S MUCH BETTER!"

I struggled with this idea every day that I went into work. The problem was that my wife and kids liked to eat so I had no choice!

So, how does this story end...

This story ends with a CRUSADE being born out of a burning desire to correct an injustice. I left the timeshare industry all together because my integrity was simply not for sale! I could not be a part of a process that put people in such dire financal trouble for a lifetime, for a one time commission that I would have spent in a matter of months. THAT was not fair and I could not and would not continue to do it.

As a matter of fact, I actually had several owners still within their recission period where they could legally cancel their upgrades, and I called them and told them what I had found out and asked them to please cancel their contracts. I gave up thousands of dollars in income, but that $5,000 - $6,000 of income to me represented over $90,000 in debt to families that had trusted me. What would you have done?

Although, I felt that I had been given an inside track to an industry that desperately needs accountibility. I felt that I had met enough owners and guests over a period of 14 months to recognize a need for, and give people a resource for the truth if they would be willing to listen.
